Rocks in a Jar
You need to get your priorities straight.
You give way too much time, effort, investment, and attention to things that don’t really matter too much in the big scheme of things.
As I’ve said before, you must have concrete goals driving your actions and decisions, but learning how to prioritize these goals is also key to ensure that your investment – mental or otherwise – is proportional to its importance and relevance in your life.
So to illustrate this, I’ll use this classic example.
Rocks in a Jar
Let’s say I’ve got a clear glass jar and I put a bunch of big rocks in it to fill it up to the top.
Is it full?
No.
I then take a bunch of little rocks and pour them into the jar, and they fall in between the little spaces left by the big rocks.
Is it full now?
No.
So I grab a bucket of sand and begin to pour it into the jar, and the sand falls in between the smaller spaces left by the little rocks.
How about now?
Finally. The jar is full.
Now what’s the point of this?
Simple.
If I started off with the sand – those tiny little rocks that make for breathtaking views on beaches in exotic travel spots – you would have had no room to put the big rocks in.
The same is true in life.
The big rocks represent your biggest priorities in life – your body and health, your peace and sanity, your life mission, your self-development.
The smaller rocks represent the things such as your hobbies, your good friends and more serious relationships, etc.
And finally, the sand stands for the little things in life. Date night, the game on the weekend, and so on.
Take a look at your life.
What are your big rocks? Little rocks? Sand?
Write them all out and reflect on that.
Have you been acting accordingly? Are your current results in life indicative of that hierarchy?
You’ll probably find you give way too much to the areas that are just sand and have neglected the big ones that need to come first. Tons of people run around stressed and hurt and holding themselves back due to the lack of putting these things in order and adhering to them.
No matter what you’ve written down, THIS is how you need to approach your life. It’s gotta be reflected in your thoughts, your habits, and your decision making day to day.
Always keep things in perspective.
Always stand true to your goals.
