The Old School Approach to Bodybuilding
Imagine for a sec that you’re back in the 1500s.
You have no idea about any of this scientific stuff, but you are smack dab in the middle of The Renaissance and want to create an aesthetic physique by building muscle and dropping fat.
Better yet, picture yourself as Leonardo da Vinci himself looking to open up his own bodybuilding gym and sculpt people in real life.
How would you go about doing things?
How would you decide what the best way is to train, eat, and so on to maximize your results?
This is undoubtedly an interesting question, but it’s one that I pose for good reason because it gets your mind thinking.
As you very well know by now, I’m an avid proponent of evidence-based fitness, but as you may also realize, lots of people get caught up in thinking that this is SCIENCE-only fitness and create abysmal divides between the “bros” and the intelligent fitness class.
Evidence based fitness is not science-only fitness. Share on XBut in reality, the difference isn’t all that big when it comes down to things.
People have been getting big and strong for a long time now, and while evidence based fitness offers us immense value in terms of understanding truth and fine tuning our approach, it isn’t some majestic unicorn that obliterates everything in its path.
Think back to that da Vinci’s gym example.
Do you really think that the basics couldn’t have been figured out over time?
- Intensity within a certain range is important
- Higher frequency tends to yield better results
- Volume is most important
- Certain exercises work different muscle groups better than others
- You have to eat enough and enough protein to grow
- Sleep is important
- Low stress lifestyle is key
- Losing/gaining weight slowly over time yields better results than doing so quickly
And so on.
Yes, there is value to creating controlled experiments with randomized samples with accurate measurements and statistical analysis.
But it isn’t the only way to get to truth.
More efficient, accurate, powerful, and trustworthy? Absolutely.
But let’s not forget that we aren’t handicapped if we don’t have access to those things.
In fact, this was so important that it is a critical component of my evidence based fitness model.
There is something to be said about good ol’ fashioned hard work, tinkering with things in real life, and looking at what works out there.
The bro-scientists out there and people who follow them may not be the most pleasant to deal with sometimes, but at the end of the day, they’re just people using what they have access to in pursuit of their goal.
Show them the evidence, be patient, and remember that we’re not so far off from them after all.
Evidence-based fitness is a modern-luxury, and they probably don’t know any better or are intimidated by it from lack of understanding.
So whenever you encounter these types, don’t laugh or ridicule. Point out the flaws, correct, remind them of our desire to achieve the same goal in the best way we have the ability to, and lead by example.
